Day 5 - Little India

  Time time time.
Wait a little... Little India will come tommorrow.

I didn't realize I take it wrong until visited Little India. Days before, I took a photo for a interesting shop shelf and said it is Thai temple style. No, actually it is Indian temple style. Later we go that shop again, I realize they prepared 3 special shelves to represent 3 typical cultures in SG: Chinese Opera Stage type for China town, Indian Temple for Little India, Sultan Mosque shape for Arab Str. The last shelf is really so so, I didn't even notice it.
They say little india is not safe. But it is very hard to judge if SG people tell you not safe: is it really not safe, or it just means you should take good care of your bag for there's thief? But anyway, I am lucky. My classmate decided to join us girls when I told him we will visit there at Friday night.

Of course a lot of Indian living in Little India

Flower necklace. Very special. Indians are clever, they weave flowers very quickly onto a dry leave rope to make a necklace. We bought one for each.

The material: fresh flowers. Maily use jasmine, but it is different from Chinese jasmine. Although the same shape, it only have a very little fragrance.

Another very bright type

Flower never fading and lanterns

cloth and lantern

Dunlop street, vegetable sellers

The area is also colorful, but different

Little India is a relatively poor area. A lot of Indians come to SG to work. We once see a truck full of Indian constructors passing by. To do construction work in tropical heat is not an easy job.

At the same time, Little India is a trourism spot. The guide book recommends this restaurant: Banana Leaf Apolo. The name comes from the very special plate to eat with, a big square banana leaf. Seems Indian like Apolo much, quite some restaurant naming with Apolo.

yes, we all have orchid jasmine necklace on.

Georgia with her coconut

A typical set: A lime juice, rice, curry, chilli pawn
banana leaf is good, wont broke even with fork strike on it. Tastes nice. But to tell the truth, it feels weird to see rices spread on the leave, as if I just broke my bowl.

People here all busy to take photos before eat

Then the Indian Temple. it has a terribly long name: Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple.
Just before the gate, this thin old woman is selling those cheap stuff. A lot of people go in and out. I am hesitating whether it is proper to take the picture. She's tired, thin, with a religion white mark on forehead.
In hesitation, it blurs.

The gate
The pre-requisite to go into the door is, to take off shoes. It's fine as long as visit is permitted.
Actually I wanted to go into Sultan Mosque very much. But didn't make it, the open visit time is very short. And as handbook said, need to cover arms and legs, plus take off shoes before go in. Well, it is already very nice. As I know, Mosque usually never allows woman in. I am very curious what it will look like inside.

Ceiling with lotus

people with religion
When Ye and I walk inside, we are the only non-indian, looking arround curiously. Are we offensive? :p

the master, looks quite cool. He springs water drops into niche.

gods grouping on the temple top, beneath the starry black sky

backyard

people pray before the god.
Well, gods are quite frightening, with a lot of tongues, and a lot of mighty hands.

I prefer this small black elephant god.

the woman with jasmine in hair

The candle lights in flower plates

The god in yoga position, still terrifying

People wait to pray in lines

The man selling cloth in Mustafa Centre.
Mustafa Centre is a big famous shop for 24 hours business and cheap items.
