The email to Denise:About Herb Painting

  Hi LK,

I am very glad you like the book! Maria Sibylla Merian is the artist I mentioned in Heidelberg. She is so important for me because she was a painter and scientist at a time when art and science were men's business.
European flower painters were mainly painting decorative garden flowers (like Redouté) or herbs (like Elizabeth Blackwell). M.S.Merian's style was more similar to Redouté, but she also had this scientific aspect about development of insects and the plants they live on.

I remember beautiful flower (bamboo, lotus, plum blossoms) paintings from China, and I know there is a long tradition of natural healing methods and medicinal herbs. Is there also a tradition of painting herbs?
(Hehe, that sounds funny, like herbs with brush, colour and paper ;)

Haha, this picture is really cute. :D

About flower painting, as you said, we have long long tradition to paint bamboo, orchid, lotus, plum and so on. This is artistic works, mainly. There are two styles.
One is we called 写意, to draw the meaning, abstract style, to show the spirit.
The other is 工笔,that is focus on details and imitation. I suppose this style will be more close to real flowers. However, it still for decorating purpose.

Let me find some pictures for you.

This is in the middle place of abstract and detail style.

This is more abstract

This is the detailed style:

A little slow. Click into each picture, you can see details. Actually if it is the real painting, when you get close, you can see how each fibre goes, it suppose to be, that's what called detailed style.

About herb painting, yes, we have a great man on it. How lucky! The one is always remembered for the great achievement. I think one of the best 100 Chinese scientists in the history. Maybe deserve the respect of the whole world, too. Without him, Chinese traditional medicine may not as current.

He is:

Li Shi Zhen (李时珍 1518-1593)
I got a picture of him on net.

It is a painting, you see, not photo. So he may not look like that. It is a picture by later people. But he should somehow in that style. An ancient scholar and famous doctor that cured a lot of people.

Scroll down this page (台湾站点,不懂这边干吗打不开), you can see a photo of book. That is his master piece. A huge herb book with about 1160 pictures. As you may know, all Chinese at that time use brush as you paint. So it is black and white, draw with lines. Detail narration is in words.
It is the most important and famous medical book in Chinese history. The book title is 本草纲目, in English, the Catalog of Herbs. I think it also includes some insects or animals that can use in medicine. Also some other knowledge. I am not so sure. It is sometimes regarded as a cyclopedia, but mainly in herd, I think.
It is a scientific book. He spent his whole life in collecting the information, climb all those mountains to find them, testing the herb, paint and write the book. And his family also worked for that, such as his nephews as said. It is a tough task.

Actually I never read this book. It is a real scientific book for medical people in my view. Nevertheless, it has pictures, lots of.

Actually I think the man posting everyday must have this book. Otherwise he can't know so much about herb. This is the base book for this area.

Ah, here's an English site:

  本草里面不仅是植物和动物

  还有矿物,水,火,金属等,也有很多验方,有些实在古怪。

  对,是有金属矿物什么的。所以网上介绍上说,比较像百科全书。
  我觉得多半也是因为那些金属之类的可以入药什么的,所以他才去关心一下,顺便记下来。有侧重的百科
