Congratulations to your pottery deal!
I really like these vases (and the photos). The warm colours, the organic form and texture... they correspond with the colours of the room. Angela's vase looks like one lotus stem surrounded by several others, it must look beautiful holding a single flower or a lotus fruit.
What do the characters on LK's vase mean? 'Tasty fish'? ;-)
Somehow the carved (or scratched?) fish decoration reminds me of something. I'm thinking about it, and suddenly Asger Jorn's ceramics come to my mind, although it looks quite different.
Asger Jorn was a danish painter who also worked with ceramics. I remember a dish with a decoration carved (scratched?) into the glaze: two strange animals, some kind of amphibian and something resembling a fish.
Unfortunately my scanner doesn't work at the moment, so I can't show the picture here.
I discovered one with a similar technique but different colours and style:

I admit these examples look totally different to your vases - but nevertheless interesting, aren't they?
Obviously I am very fond of denmark and its artists...

For Angela's vase, we discussed very serious before settle the deal. :)
As you see the nect is very slim, so actually the bottle only have a very small open, exactly for one slim flower. And I can see no way to put the water in and out(only one small hole), and it is a problem if the stem rotten in it.
So the idea is: the vase is beautiful enough itself.
Second: put in a single dry reed flower (seeds?)
Mine is with character Fu, that is happiness
Fish traditionally means every year you got extra (money/food), for Yu (fish) pronounces the same as extra/remaining/more
But actually I buy it only for the fish pattern, I like it. This one is not so perfect for the line style. This pattern is famous for the pottery made by neolithic primary man living in Shanxi province, Face and fish bowl, I like it very much, simple and beautiful.

I finally managed to fix my scanner problem! Now you can take a look on the plates I mentioned:
They are both made by Asger Jorn in 1953.
Yes, the small opening of the lotus vase could be a problem (or you need a long pipe cleaner). I agree: it is beautiful enough itself.
The pictures on the website you mentioned are very interesting. The fish on the 4th dish looks funny, it has a pig nose ;-)
The ornament of the 8th is very nice, I see the likeness with your vase. I guess it brings you happiness - with or without 'fu' written on it :-)

Yes, the two plates are very special. When looking at it, I get a lot of imagination, but can't catch exactly the thoughts. They are...well, I don't want to say mysterious. They make you think and think. And yes, they are beautiful.
I like the two birds. :) naive and cute.
Also the moondog, he's also thinking. :)
